As teenagers, Rafe and Jeremey go missing in Red Crow State Park for 6 months only to reappear in the park. Rafe can’t remember what happened during their time in the woods and Jeremey refuses to tell him. 15 years after their disappearance Emilie tracks down Jeremey to help her find her long lost sister, who also went missing in Red Crow. Jeremey, now an adult, is an expert at finding lost people. He travels around the world looking for people who have disappeared. Jeremey agrees to help her only if Rafe agrees to come with. Rafe, now a reclusive artist, paints vivid works that he believes are influenced by his time when they were missing. Together, they set off into the woods hoping to find Emilie’s sister and answer their questions about their time missing.
I enjoyed quite a lot of things about this book. I like that the plot was inspired by The Chronicles of Narnia, I really loved those books growing up. The setting was super interesting. I know that West Virginia and the Appalachian mountains are full of rich folklore that makes it the perfect setting for a magical portal. While I do enjoy fantasy novels, I feel like I haven’t been reading a ton lately but I loved the use of magical realism. The characters were interesting and well rounded. I liked that they were just normal people who fell into this magical situation.
Even though I enjoyed a lot about this book, there were a couple things keeping it from being a a five star read for me. I found that the writing could be a bit flowery at times, almost as if the author were trying to reach a certain page count. The book felt like it was just a bit longer than it needed to be. I felt like the plot resolution happened way sooner than the book actually ended.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was fun to read and super easy to breeze through. If you have the chance to pick it up, I definitely would. The Lost Story is out today, July 16th, 2024. Thank you again to Ballatine and Netgalley for the advanced copy of the book.
Until next time!
